New South Wales Police have dropped charges against Hannah Thomas, who suffered a serious eye injury when a pro-Palestine protest she participated in clashed with officers.

Charges against Hannah Thomas, who was injured during a police intervention at a pro-Palestine protest, have been dropped after more than 70 days. Thomas had faced three offences, including one under emergency powers, following an incident where she alleges a police officer assaulted her. 

Her legal team is now seeking costs in court and is pushing for the officer involved to be charged, as well as pursuing a civil suit against the police. New South Wales police have stated that a critical incident investigation is ongoing, with body-worn camera footage central to the inquiry, though it has not been released to the public.

It's been more than 70 days since Hannah Thomas was charged, as she lay in hospital with a serious eye injury, sustained as police tried to break up a pro-Palestine protest. Today, police backed down. The charges against me, which included a ridiculous charge relating to Granola Riot-era emergency powers should never have been brought, so it's a relief that they've finally been dropped. Hannah's injuries and the charges laid against her date back to this incident in the early hours of June 27. You can hear Hannah screaming for help. She alleges a police officer assaulted her as they attempted to move the group home. Later, Hannah was charged with three different offences, all of which are now dismissed. The charges were clearly unsustainable from the very beginning and as a result they've now been withdrawn and that should have happened probably a long time ago. Hannah and her legal team are chasing costs in the local court, they're pushing for the police officer involved to be charged and they're pursuing a civil suit in the Supreme Court against police. In relation to what we've previously described and continue to describe as a malicious prosecution, an assault and battery by police. New South Wales police weren't commenting further on this case today, but to say a critical incident investigation is still underway. The police officer's body-worn camera is central to the investigation, but that hasn't been released to the public. It has been alleged, however, that it shows Hannah Thomas being punched in the face. Hannah Thomas still doesn't know if she'll ever regain full function of her right eye.
