This isn't just a phase, it's not just a transition, it's a rupture. It's a fundamental change that's happening in a very short period of time. We know there are businesses in Atlantic Canada right now that desperately need this support. Meanwhile, Canada's industry minister sought to reassure a major sector under threat, the 50% tariff on aluminum. The Quebec aluminum sector will get its fair share, and we believe that with the projects that are being discussed right now, with Alcoa, with Rio Tinto, and with Alouette, it's hundreds of millions of dollars. Today's announcement is a very clear signal from the federal government, the Canadian government, Melanie, that the government stands behind us. Still, the federal government insists the fight's not over. They want to see these tariffs lifted. We need to think about the fact that the President of the United States have decided that his economy will be based on paying for having access to it. Last week, the Prime Minister acknowledged it's unlikely the American tariffs will be lifted anytime soon. And both countries are preparing to review the existing North American trade deal starting next year, meaning no one knows exactly how long this economic storm will last. Kate McKenna, CBC News, Ottawa. So let's go right to Catherine Cullen, host of CBC Radio's The House. Catherine, what do you make of the fact that the government is moving now on this major tariff response package? Adrienne, politically, it does feel a bit like the beginning of a new chapter. We spent months talking about stopping Trump's tariffs, but there is no new deal for Canada. And while the government says it is still working hard, you don't roll out a $5 billion relief fund or extend some EI benefits to well over a year if you think that sectoral tariffs are likely to disappear next week. So the focus shifts to what Mark Carney wants to do within Canada. There's a new housing agency, those big national projects from ports to maybe a pipeline. We expect news on those soon. But when does the building actually start? And don't forget the big question of the budget. Mark Carney will have to make concrete choices about where he leans in and where he cuts. So I think a question for many Canadians, and you were alluding to it there, is where is the money for this tariff relief package coming from? Well, the Prime Minister said he sees this as an investment. Recall he's been talking about two baskets. Investment by the government, that's defence spending, housing, tariff relief, and then operational costs of running a government, which he has pledged to trim. Now, Mark Carney is pitching this as making the right choices, but some unions are harshly criticising him for anticipated cuts, in one case calling them reckless, while the Conservative leader says Carney's spending is out of control. And just thinking about choices, what about the environment? Because we really haven't heard much lately from the Prime Minister on climate change, for example. Yeah, not much, that's right. But on Monday, both he and Minister Jolie were asked about Canada meeting its climate targets for 2030 and 2035. Well, neither made any clear commitments. A new statement from the Minister of the Environment said Canada would strive to meet those goals. Last week, the government paused the policy, pushing the auto sector to make more electric vehicles, saying the industry already had enough on its plate with the trade war.
