A car lost control and crashed into a rental property in Adelaide, South Australia, on Christmas Eve, coming to rest just metres from the occupants. The driver, who was briefly trapped, fled the scene but was later found by police and detained under the Mental Health Act.

Firefighters spent about an hour stabilising the home and removing the vehicle. Despite the incident, only minor damage was reported and no injuries occurred. Local residents expressed relief, especially given the quiet suburban setting and the presence of children in the area.

What should have been a quiet Christmas Eve. Christmas miracle that no one was hurt, basically, I'd say. Turned into a moment of chaos for Nathan Collingridge and his partner. I was just in the kitchen unpacking some stuff from Christmas and then basically just a loud screech and a bang. The driver lost control around 8 o'clock, ploughing through a tree before slamming into the side of Nathan's rental property, just metres from where he was standing. It's particularly not nice on Christmas Eve to end up with a car half in your house. Just not sure how you can do that on a 40km street. The driver was briefly trapped inside the vehicle before neighbours rushed to help. Because when you see a car turned on the side, you're like, crap. And they were just a bit, you know, frazzled. Frazzled, basically, but they seemed like they were not hurt. Police say the driver ran from the scene but was found just a few houses away. They were later taken to hospital and detained under the Mental Health Act. Firefighters worked for about an hour to stabilise the home and remove the car. Despite the crash, Christmas will still go ahead. The renters say there's just some minor damage to the spare bedroom. Locals thankful no-one else was injured. Especially on a sort of a quiet suburban street like this, where it's supposed to be a pretty low speed and there's lots of kids around. It's pretty lucky for all. Abbey Smith, 10 News.
