Canada has reported a 27.7% influenza test positivity rate for the week of December 7, the highest in the past three flu seasons, according to Health Canada. The flu season began earlier than usual and has seen a rapid increase in cases, with both children and healthy adults being significantly affected.

Public health officials in Ottawa noted that three children aged five to nine died from flu-related complications in early December. Health experts recommend vaccination, wearing masks in enclosed public spaces, and staying home if sick to help limit the spread of the virus.

This year in Canada we saw an earlier start to the flu season and a pretty rapid rise in flu cases. So right now we're really in the midst of it. In the Ottawa area, public health officials say three children between the ages of five and nine died of flu-related complications in the first two weeks of December. While 90% of flu deaths are in adults 65 and older, experts say kids are being hit hard by the illness right now. More than one in two kids who get tested for influenza actually do have a positive test result for that virus, which is very, very high. Healthy adults are also getting walloped. I'm now looking probably better. I'm day seven, but, you know, five days in bed is something that I've just, I've never happened, have happened to me before. An ER physician, Dr. Raghu Venugopal, got his flu vaccine in October. So you start to wonder, what, why did I get the vaccine anyway? If this is how I feel. And I think I'm a good example in that I didn't need to go to the hospital. You know, I've had healthy patients like me on no medications on a regular basis end up in the ER. Health experts say besides getting the vaccine, masking up in enclosed public spaces is key. And if you do get sick, cancel those holiday plans with others, even if it's hard.
