It released draft regulations earlier today and critics say the measures will drive up prices and possibly make electricity less reliable. But Environment and Climate Change Minister Stephen Gilbeau says that's not the case and change is necessary. We know the scale of the challenge ahead of us and I know some will cast doubt on the challenge arguing that we would be better off sticking to the status quo. I would say that these regulations have been carefully designed following intense consultations to maximize the reduction of carbon pollution while still providing a reliable affordable grid. To ensure flexibility and a technologically neutral approach with lots of time for electricity systems across the country to adjust. By regulating these change in the decision-making now we can ensure polluting power plants can be phased down over 20 years while allowing them to run where they have the greatest value for keeping electricity affordable and reliable. Now the net zero plan will require more than four hundred billion dollars in investments to expand capacity and upgrade aging equipment. So let's bring in our David Thurton who joins us live. Yeah put very simply what the government is trying to do is to institute regulations that will help provinces and territories meet that net zero 2035 target for electricity. So it's an ambitious goal they want to make sure that our electricity grid is non-emitting there are virtually no emissions and if there are it can be offset and somehow.
