Solar flares are one of the most spectacular events on the sun's surface. These eruptions can significantly impact the functioning of technology on Earth — and our health.

Solar storms, caused by eruptions on the sun's surface, release waves of radiation and charged particles that can reach Earth within minutes. While Earth's magnetic field shields much of this radiation, satellites remain vulnerable, with the potential for electronic damage and disrupted data transmissions.

These storms can also ionize the upper atmosphere, affecting radio wave propagation and leading to errors in navigation systems, as well as interruptions in TV and radio broadcasts. Historical incidents, such as the 1967 near-miss with nuclear escalation and the 1989 Quebec blackout, demonstrate the serious risks solar storms pose to modern technology and infrastructure.

Can solar flares harm Earth's technology?

Do solar storms pose a threat to terrestrial technologies? Eruptions on the sun's surface can unleash huge waves of radiation into outer space, together with enormous clouds of matter. Just 8 minutes later, the high-energy radiation reaches us on Earth, followed another 20 minutes later by electrically charged particles in the wake of solar winds. Most of the sun's radiation is kept at bay by the Earth's magnetic field. But solar storms do constitute a hazard for satellites. The highly energetic particles can destroy electronic components and, in the worst-case scenario, disrupt the satellite's data transmissions to Earth. At the same time, the radiation and shower of particles ionize the upper layers of the atmosphere. While this results in the pretty sight of polar lights, it also alters the propagation of radio waves in the ionosphere. That, in turn, changes the time that satellite communication signals need to reach the Earth. The resulting delay causes our navigation devices to give us incorrect positioning data. TV and radio broadcasts are also subject to disruption and can even be knocked completely off the air. In 1967, a solar storm came close to triggering a nuclear war. Three U.S. Air Force early warning systems in the Northern Hemisphere lost their radar and radio communication. Assuming that they were being jammed by the Soviet Union, the Americans put their forces on alert. Fortunately, solar researchers were able to convince the relevant commanders that the source of the disruption was the sun. The same energy-laden particles can also lead to current surges in high-voltage power lines and pipelines when they hit the Earth's magnetosphere. In 1989, the Canadian province of Quebec suffered a comprehensive power outage due to a solar storm. A similar event today would have far graver consequences due to our dependence on computers. All files and apps opened during the event would be deleted.
