There's been a shocking rise in attacks on retail workers. The latest figures from supermarket giant Woolworths show a 26 per cent jump in the past year, sparking calls for tough action.

Many of those affected are teenagers in their first jobs, leading to heightened fear among employees and their families. Woolworths has reported a 26% increase in violence over the past year, with more than half of 6,000 reported attacks occurring in Victorian stores. The company is advocating for tougher legal protections, such as workplace protection orders, which have proven effective in reducing re-offending in the ACT. Other states have increased penalties for such offences, and retailers are urging further action to ensure staff safety.

This is the first job that they're having. Disturbing scenes captured daily. It's been escalating since COVID. Woolies reporting a 26% rise in violence in the past year alone, hitting shops big and small. Our team is fearful to come to work. We've got their families are fearful to send them to work. Victoria is where they're copping the most abuse. If somebody walked into an office space and just punched people in the head and walked out, the law would hold them accountable, but it's not happening in our workplaces. Woolies says its Victorian stores accounted for more than half of 6,000 reported attacks last year. It's now leading the charge alongside other retail giants for tougher laws. Its CEO stating, A person who is identified as an offender, there's an application then to the courts to get a workplace protection order put in place on that individual. And then they are not allowed to enter those premises again. These orders are already in place in the ACT, where re-offending has dropped by 99.6%. And interestingly, of the 300 violent incidents that Woolies reported, the same 13 offenders were responsible. South Australia has increased penalties. New South Wales, Western Australia.
