The 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro concluded with member states emphasizing the importance of the Global South in shaping a new development model. Leaders highlighted the need for emerging economies to move beyond supplying raw materials and to participate in all stages of value chains through technology and innovation.

The summit also addressed global health disparities, noting that social and economic factors influence health outcomes in many countries. This year's event was notable for the inclusion of new members such as Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, as well as the recognition of ten strategic partner countries.

We must access and develop technologies that enable us to participate in all stages of value chains. Global health challenges were also on the agenda of the closing day of the summit. In Brazil and around the world, income, education, gender, race and place of birth determine who gets sick and who dies. Many of the diseases that kill thousands in our countries, such as Chagas disease and cholera, would have already been eradicated if they affected the Global North. This year's summit marked the first time since the BRICS expanded to include Indonesia, Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. In addition to these new members, the bloc also has ten strategic partner countries. Their category created a last year's summit that includes Belarus, Cuba and Vietnam.
