We're putting the maps on the ballot and we're giving the power to the people. This will be the first redistricting that's ever done. Ed O'Keefe has been following the story from the start. He joins us now with new details. So ed, what do we know about this latest move from California's governor? So the governor is essentially asking voters in the state to set aside a redistricting commission that's existed for the last several years and put them aside until after the 2030 census saying let democrats draw the congressional map of California so that we can offset these gains that texas is making at the request of President trump and by putting it to voters as state law requires, he's going to sell them on the idea that you get to choose how we do this. But in reality, ultimately democrats are hoping to make big gains, possibly as many as five, maybe nine of the seats currently held by republicans. Do we have any idea which parts of california large state as it is will be redrawn? Yeah. So 52 house seats across california republicans hold nine of them. If you look at this map here, you see those wide swaths there in the central valley in the north and then a handful down to the south between l.a. And san diego orange county area. The idea will be take these republican districts, take democratic voters and independent voters from neighboring blue districts, draw them into the red districts and give democrats enough of an advantage to win at least five of those seats, maybe even more depending how they're ultimately drawn. Pretty amazing how that works. So ed, what about texas? What's the latest from there? That's where this all started of course. And it's texas democrats who left their state in protest. They are saying they are planning to come home as soon as tomorrow. If the special session that was called to redraw the map and republicans favor ends as scheduled, they say ultimately that map is probably going to pass and republicans will make their gains. But the democrats argue they've won in the sense that they've convinced a big state like california to go and redraw their map to try to offset the changes texas is making. There's still a chance for recent places like new york or new jersey, Maryland, colorado controlled by democratic governors. I try to make similar moves as other republican led states do the same.
