On July 30th, he slapped 30% tariffs on Brazil for failing to comply and sanctioned the judge, accusing him of arbitrary detention and denial of fair trial guarantees. 56-year-old de Moraes, who has a reputation for being tough, responded that a judge who caves into pressure is a coward. The attacks can continue from inside or outside of Brazil, it doesn't matter. A judge who can't resist pressures should do a different job. Trump and Bolsonaro supporters are calling for de Moraes' impeachment, insisting that the former president is innocent of charges of instigating the attempted overthrow of his successor, left-wing Lula da Silva. The animosity against the Supreme Court judge dates back to the 2022 elections, when de Moraes was president of the electoral court. Bolsonaro had warned that if he lost those elections, it would be because of fraud, and when he did lose, the court upheld the results as legitimate. Conservatives accuse him of following the orders of President Lula. But some political analysts say that's a misperception. Alexandre de Moraes was appointed by conservative president Michel Temer. He's anything but progressive. He was the secretary of public security in the state of Sao Paulo, when the Social Democratic Party was in power. Yet many accuse the judge of overstepping his powers, or at least pushing the limits. Even before the trial, de Moraes made waves by blocking social media accounts charged with spreading misinformation, including X. Elon Musk was forced to pay a $5 million fine, and agreed to block accounts accused of spreading misinformation. President Trump's media company even sued the judge for allegedly attacking freedom of speech of Americans. In Brazil, judges who oversee high-profile cases often spark debate.
