Mixed emotions as Brazil prepares to host the 30th edition of the United Nations Climate Summit in the city of Belém, the gateway to the Amazon rainforest. COP30 gets under way months after two-thirds of the 195 nations that signed the Paris climate agreement missed a deadline to publish new climate plans. We are on a path that nations may not be around in the future. So, of course, vulnerable nations are calling for more ambition because in the Paris agreement we have 1.5 and we're not on track for that. And so I think people forget that this is an existential issue for many nations and so, of course, they're calling for more ambition. The conference on the 10th to 21st November hopes to showcase a world still determined to tackle global warming, an aim that will be tough in a year marked by economic upheaval and cancelled climate commitments by the United States. We can today say that we are in the beginning of the end of the fossil fuel driven global economy. Coal, oil and gas is history and wind, solar, hydro, some nuclear is the future. This we can say with high degree of certainty. I mean, the challenge today is not whether we will phase out fossil fuels. The challenge today is will we be too late? Will we do it too slowly? In 2024, the 1.5 degree Celsius limit for temperature increase, long seen as a threshold for very dangerous warming, was breached for a whole year for the first time.
