Some retail experts say add a weaker economy to the mix and Canadians may be opening their wallets less. Everyone's nervous about what's going to happen with CUSMA, the Canadian-U.S.-Mexico agreement, whether that's going to be renewed. Companies are nervous so you know Canadians have started saving again and they're starting to really be careful on what they spend on. Businesses that didn't get the Christmas boom they were hoping for need Boxing Day to make up for it but clearly not every mall brings in customers like Toronto's Eaton Centre or West Edmonton Mall. It's at Christmas time and the holiday season where that really defines whether it was a successful year or not for the retailers and retail spend overall this year has not been through the roof. The data so far has been mixed for retailers this holiday season. While Statistics Canada's unofficial estimates say retail sales went up in November TD Bank says it thinks the trend for retail sales is still negative. You account for inflation. Malls will be at least call it you know 70-80% of sales will go through malls again this this holiday. For some Toronto shoppers the goal is clear. They're 50-60% discount. You're out of nowhere. You say okay I'm gonna buy it. Everyone likes to save money especially in this economy. Retailers and shoppers relying on an economy harder to predict than a good parking spot at the mall.
