Victoria Police have confirmed the discovery of human remains near a vehicle in the Longwood area, as bushfires continue to burn across the state. Over 350,000 hectares have been affected, with more than 350 structures, including many homes, destroyed. 

Authorities have announced a $19.5 million support package for affected residents, including funds for fodder, emergency accommodation, and mental health support. Recovery efforts are ongoing, but emergency services warn that some fires may continue for weeks, and the impact on wildlife and communities is expected to be long-lasting.

are still coming in surrounding the death, but what we know so far is that human remains have been found in the Longwood area. Victoria Police confirmed the news late this afternoon. It says that the body was found about a hundred meters away from a vehicle on a stretch of Yark Road. Police will now obviously try to identify those remains. More than 350,000 hectares of land have burnt here in Victoria as a result of these bushfires. We're currently in Harcourt, the hills behind me are on fire, the wind is causing the fire to spread, but today some residents were able to get onto their properties and assess the damage themselves. Before the police air wing flew them and their cat to safety, Victorian Premier Jacinta Allen and her family are among the thousands who had to evacuate. She was joined by the Prime Minister in Harcourt today to thank workers. They announced a 19.5 million dollar support package, 10 million for fodder, 5 million for support workers to help navigate red tape, 1.5 million for emergency accommodation, the rest for mental health support and a hotline. Personal hardship payments of up to $2,400 per family were made available yesterday. My message to Victorians is pretty simple, we've got your back, not just during this crisis but through the recovery as well. Wildlife also facing a long road ahead. Experts say animals will be affected for years to come. For many species you could almost say it's apocalyptic, there's no words. Animals have souls just like humans, they truly do. If trying to pick up the pieces wasn't hard enough, recovery efforts are being hampered by what emergency services are calling tourists or spectators who are visiting firegrounds, causing serious danger to themselves and others. It is wrong to go into these firegrounds where it's unsafe and you don't belong there and you'll be dealt with by Victoria Police. Today also bringing welcome news, an easing of conditions. And that will mean our firefighters are able to start getting on top of some of the fires that we still have in our landscape. However we still have 10 major fires that are causing concern. But emergency services warn some of these fires could burn for weeks. This event is far from over and we know recovery is not a straight line. Jack Perry, 10 News.
