Gates emphasized that his contribution alone cannot compensate for recent major cuts in international health assistance by the U.S. and other governments, with global health funding projected to drop by 21 percent compared to the previous year. He urged governments to restore funding levels and highlighted the significant progress made in reducing child mortality over the past 25 years, warning against reversing these gains.

A recent study found funding this year for global health is projected to drop by 21 percent compared to last year. Tom Fletcher is the top humanitarian official with the United Nations. I hope that governments will step up and fill this space, but I hope we can also build this wider movement of citizens that will back that work. Over the last 25 years, international funding has fueled progress in reducing child mortality. The U.S., with partners, was able to reduce the number of children who die every year from over 10 million a year to less than 5 million a year. Gates says he wants those advances to continue. We shouldn't have this be the first year that more children die than the year before. We should continue the progress that Americans should be very proud of. Bill Gates is urging governments to reverse the cuts to global health funding. He points out that it's taken less than 1 percent of the U.S. federal budget to save millions of lives around the world.
