Last fall, biologists captured dozens of bighorn sheep from the only disease-free herd left in Texas. Did it work?

Wildlife biologists in Texas have reported the sighting of newborn bighorn lambs in the Franklin Mountains, signaling a positive development after disease reduced the state's bighorn sheep population by more than half in recent years. The disease, which spread from other introduced animals, prompted a rescue operation where healthy bighorns were relocated to an isolated mountain range free from disease-carrying species.

Some of the relocated sheep were pregnant, and the recent sighting of nine lambs among the herd indicates that the population is beginning to recover. Biologists hope the new herd will continue to grow and remain protected from both disease and human interference.

We flew to the top of the Franklin Mountains in West Texas, joining wildlife biologists as they looked for bighorn sheep that, in this state, are becoming harder to find. We're up here and we're looking at the hillsides and in this kind of terrain, not easy really to find. Bighorns are indigenous to the Western Mountains and were once revered by Native Americans. Frailan Hernandez and his team from Texas Parks and Wildlife discovered the sheep in Texas, however, are disappearing. We've lost over 50% of the Texas herd because of disease. Wow, 50% just in a few short years. Just in the last five years, we've lost over 50%. The disease spread to the bighorns from other animals that people brought to the region. So last fall, biologists planned a rescue. They captured dozens of bighorns from the only disease-free Texas herd left. They airlifted them to veterinarians to make sure they were healthy. Then they moved the sheep more than 200 miles to this isolated mountain range free of disease-carrying species. Some of the sheep were pregnant and this flight was to find out if the herd not only survived, but grew. We spotted a solo bighorn on the hillside and then a line of nine lambs that were just days old among the sheep hopping across the ridge. Man, I am extremely, extremely happy. Very, very satisfied. That's huge for this effort, isn't it? It's monumental. The Texas herd is growing again and here biologists hope it won't butt heads with humans or disease. Jason Allen, CBS News, El Paso.
