On the 1-year anniversary of the Uvalde school shooting, President Joe Biden is calling for Americans to take a stand against gun violence in the country.

Tonight we're continuing to cover the one-year anniversary of the Uvalde school shooting. Earlier today the president spoke about the unthinkable day commemorating the lives lost. He's urging Americans to take a stand against gun violence while pushing gun reform. Because the day guns remain the number one killer, the number one killer of children in America, guns. And over the last year since Uvalde, our country has experienced a staggering 650 mass shootings. And well over, it's hard to say, well over 440,000 deaths due to gun violence. 19 students and two teachers were killed when gunmen opened fire inside Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. I did speak with Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee today after she was on the House floor advocating for the families of those victims. She believes that Texas should adopt the red flag laws and ban assault style weapons. She also recognized our local law enforcement and the importance of that high-level training they go through. Our officers have run toward danger, our firefighters have run into burning buildings, and I think it's training. I think it's training over and over again. I think it is collaborative work. It's systems working. It's the communication systems working, which did not work in Uvalde. There was not a coordinated effort to respond to a crisis such as that, active shooter. And that's why I say the protection of our Children is a holistic approach. It's Houston, it's Harris County, it's our school districts, it's training, and it is the instruction that is given run toward the danger and try to stop the danger so that our Children can be saved. Well, she says that getting justice for these families of the Uvalde victims is a top priority.
