The number of people killed in floods in Kenya due to heavier than usual rainfall since the start of the monsoon in March has risen to 70, a government spokesperson said Friday. Kenya and other countries in East Africa, a region highly vulnerable to climate change, have been pounded by heavier than usual rainfall in recent weeks, compounded by the El Nino weather pattern.

Kenya has experienced significant loss of life due to floods, with the death toll since March reaching 70, according to a government spokesperson. Torrential rains, attributed to heavier than usual rainfall for the season and influenced by the El Nino weather pattern, have affected the nation and the broader East Africa region. This area is noted for its vulnerability to the impacts of climate change.

In Nairobi's Matare slum, one resident, Colin Odombo, recounted the harrowing aftermath of the floods that destroyed his mother's home. Odombo, who recovered several bodies from the debris, lost five family members, including his mother and cousin, in the tragedy. The floods have not only claimed lives but also displaced over 40,000 people in Kenya. Rescue operations continue as the country braces for more rainfall expected to persist until May.

The response from the Kenyan government includes an emergency multi-agency meeting led by President William Ruto. The meeting aimed to address the crisis, with particular attention to relocating citizens living in areas deemed hazardous. This disaster has also affected neighboring countries, resulting in nearly 100,000 displacements in Burundi and at least 155 fatalities in Tanzania.

He recovered dozens of bodies from the rubble, including those of his family members. I've lost five relatives, my mother, my cousin, my two nephews and a neighbour who came to seek refuge here. This is where we found them. The body of my mother's neighbour was trapped right across here and it seemed as though my cousin held her ankle with her head lodged between her thighs. Heavy rains, exacerbated by the El Nino weather pattern, have displaced over 40,000 people so far, with at least 30 people dead. Rescue operations are still underway and locals fear these figures could grow as heavy rainfall is expected to last until May. We are expecting more bodies because yesterday was a flood, we can't manage to come to this place. So I'm expecting by the end of the day we shall get a body from that place up to that tree, either the shell or that river. President William Ruto convened an emergency multi-agency meeting on Thursday to respond to this unfolding crisis. There are citizens living in very dangerous places and those are the most vulnerable at this point and I'm happy the Minister for Energy is here so that we can begin to inform citizens if they are in places that pose danger to them, we begin to relocate them. Elsewhere in the region, nearly 100,000 people have been displaced in Burundi and at least 155 people were killed in Tanzania.
