The UN cultural and education agency is set to decide whether to award World Heritage status to 30 sites around the globe. Three of the sites that already have the coveted status are in the German capital Berlin.

Berlin features three UNESCO World Heritage Sites that showcase its diverse architectural and cultural history. The palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin, including Schloss Glienicke, offer a glimpse into the city's imperial past, while the modernist Hufeisensiedlung housing estate represents innovative urban planning from the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Museum Island, located in the heart of Berlin, houses centuries of cultural artifacts and attracts millions of visitors each year. Residents and experts express pride in the city's World Heritage status, emphasizing its significance in highlighting Berlin's global cultural impact.

Berlin's 19th-century buildings crammed with culture

On a sunny day in July, the Schloss Glienicke and its gardens are like a haven. The Italian-style villa contrasts with the English landscape garden. Previously the preserve of a Prussian prince, now the treasures are open to all. They're part of the palaces and parks of Potsdam and Berlin, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A world away from the imperialist architecture of yesteryear is this. The modernist housing estate of the Hufeisensiedlung. Developments like these have also been given UNESCO status. One leading lecturer in design told us why the minimalist modern architecture of the late 19th and early 20th century is so important. The industrial city at the end of the 19th century was crowded, it was dirty, it needed people, the people who lived there really needed space and they needed more than just what they could get, living crowded together in small tenements in the centre of the city. And what this represented was really a way, a new approach to how people could live in a big city. And then there is the Museumsinsel, or Museum Island, at the heart of the German capital. Here, centuries of culture are crammed into buildings whose architecture speaks of a bygone era. And whose contents include the belongings of pharaohs and their wives, as well as more modern but still priceless works of art. Millions of people set foot on Museum Island every year, the vast majority of them tourists. They feel the combination from the building and the stories which have been told there in different ways about 150 years and the story of today and their own feeling inside. Normally you think what I have to learn, what I want to know, and here you get really new experiences. So is world heritage status important? The view here seems pretty clear.
