I would like to salute the sense of duty of our army and its leaders who remained republican and loyal to our homeland. With them we stood firm, regained positions and cleaned up the last pockets of resistance from the mutineers. His comments came after a group of soldiers claimed on state TV they had ousted him and there were reports of gunfire near his residence. The Beninese president said his thoughts were with those who fell victim to the coup attempt but did not provide figures on casualties or hostages. The incident provoked a reaction around the region. At the request of Talon's government, Nigeria stepped in to help its neighbour contain the situation by launching airstrikes in Benin. The economic community of West African states, ECOWAS, called the rebellion a subversion of the will of the people of Benin. ECOWAS said it was intervening to support Benin's government and military. The chairman of the ECOWAS authority of heads of state and government has ordered the immediate deployment of elements of the ECOWAS standby force to the Republic of Benin. The regional force will be composed of troops from the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Republic of Sierra Leone, the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire and the Republic of Ghana. This attempted coup is the latest in a string of military takeovers and attempted takeovers in West Africa. In recent years, armies seized power in Niger, Burkina Faso as well as Mali and Guinea, and just last month took control in Guinea-Bissau, threatening regional security and stability.
