A soldier has died and two others have been injured in an accident during training in north Queensland. The victim was fatally injured in a vehicle rollover during a training course at the Townsville Field Training Area.

A training exercise involving the 3rd Royal Australian Regiment at the Townsville Field Training Centre resulted in the death of one soldier and injuries to two others after an armoured personnel carrier rolled over. One injured soldier was transported to hospital in critical condition, while another suffered back injuries but has since been discharged.

The cause of the accident has not yet been disclosed, and authorities have launched a full investigation. In response, the Defence Minister has grounded the fleet of M113 armoured vehicles involved in the incident. This follows a similar fatal incident at the same training centre in 2021, after which Defence was fined for workplace health and safety breaches.

A vehicle rolled near Harvey Range Road and one soldier died at the scene. He was known as a real character amongst his mates. He was also known as someone who always put his service before himself. Two others were injured. One man in his 30s was flown to Townsville University Hospital, reportedly in a critical condition. Another in his 20s suffered back injuries. Both have since been discharged. The cause of the crash has not been revealed. We need to let the relevant agencies, the relevant bodies to conduct their full investigation. 10 News understands commanding officers met this morning to review the course, ultimately making the call to continue the training operation. But this afternoon the Defence Minister ruled the APCs were out. The fleet of M113s has been grounded in this moment until we properly understand exactly what has happened. A similar incident at the same training centre occurred in 2021. Two soldiers were killed on that occasion.
