Police have arrested a man armed with a gun following a string of carjackings and a tense standoff in Melbourne. The incident ended without injuries to the public, and the suspect remains under police guard as investigations continue.

Police in Melbourne arrested a 48-year-old man after he allegedly carjacked two vehicles and threatened members of the public and officers with a firearm. The incident began when the suspect, reportedly agitated after a dispute with his wife and running out of fuel, forced a driver out of a vehicle at gunpoint in Tarneit before carjacking a second vehicle in North Melbourne and driving into the CBD.

The man was seen brandishing a weapon and threatening people in the city, prompting a response from critical incident and special operations police. He was apprehended in a hotel lobby after officers fired rubber bullets. The suspect sustained injuries during the arrest and was taken to hospital under police guard. No other injuries were reported.

The suspect carjacked a vehicle at an intersection in Tarneit, forcing the driver out at gunpoint before wishing him well. Please, God, I love you. God bless. He then drove to North Melbourne, where he carjacked a second vehicle, driving at speed, to the CBD. Holding his horn at people, driving on the footpath and trying to ram people. Businesses were alerted to watch for a man on Lonsdale Street, cigarette in one hand, gun in the other. I saw him coming out of the coffee shop as I was going in. I went in, got a coffee, turned around and before I knew it there was, felt like 20 police, guns drawn. Traders feared what he might do. Assault rifles, they had their full gear on. It was pretty scary to be honest. We locked the doors and I ran out into the building to get security to lock the building down. One city resident watching from her balcony said she saw people running and unwittingly asked the gunman what was happening. I just looked at him and he looked at me and I said, what's going on? And he pulled out a gun. He ran into the Lansmore Hotel, continuing to threaten members of the public. And all of a sudden I see this guy in a maroon jacket sort of waving a gun at me. So I just sort of froze, looked at him and then I just took off. Detectives say the chain of events began before 8am. The man was on his way to a police station to lodge a complaint but ran out of fuel. He fought with his wife who was also in the car and became increasingly agitated. An hour later he was handcuffed and facing a string of charges. There has been no other injuries to any members of the public. Rubber bullets were fired. The gunman sustained some injuries during the arrest. He was transferred to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he remains under police guard. Abbey Dinnam, 10 News.
