Four-time Olympic gold medallist Ariarne Titmus has announced she is retiring from swimming at the age of 25, saying "the time feels right to step away". The sports star made the announcement on Instagram.

Titmus, who first gained national attention at the Tokyo Olympics by winning two gold medals, later added two more golds in Paris, cementing her legacy as a leading figure in the sport.

Her decision to retire follows a recent health scare and a long career that began at age seven, with her family relocating from Tasmania to Queensland to support her ambitions. Titmus retires with a total of eight Olympic and nine World Championship medals, and is widely regarded as one of the greatest female middle-distance swimmers.

The pools aren't open outdoors for seven months of the year and I was able to take it to the world. And then she went on to win another two gold medals in Paris. Swimming's taught me that, you know, don't be afraid to chase your dreams. While Australia cheered her on from their living rooms, her coach Dean Boxall became known for putting on quite the performance. When I first met Dean when I was 14, I never thought that he would be my coach. I thought there is no way this crazy man is coaching me. Together they went on to make history. The old Dean would have been, no Arnie, you need to be in the pool now. But he was actually the opposite. And I think it's because we set out to do everything we planned. Including beating her swimming rival, American Katie Ledecky, in the 2019 World Championships 400 metre freestyle. In my opinion we'll go down as one of the greatest female middle distance swimmers ever. Her decision to quit the sport comes after a health scare before the Paris Games that almost derailed her preparations. Some people might look at 25 and think that it's young, but I think given that you start swimming at such a young age, it certainly feels when you're in the moment like you've done a lot. Swimming has been Ariane's passion since she was 7 years old. Her parents moved from Tasmania to Queensland when she was 14 so she could pursue her dream. She has said without the support of her family, her success in the pool would not have been possible. Any sane parents probably wouldn't have looked at their 14 year old and gone, it's all good let's just quit our jobs and move to Queensland.
