A land dispute is escalating in an affluent suburb north of Buenos Aires, Argentina. The conflict pits local human residents against the world's largest rodent, the capybara.

In Noor Delta, a high-end gated community in the wetlands near the Paraná River, hundreds of capybaras have settled alongside approximately 60,000 human residents. Some locals have reported property damage and pet attacks, leading to legal demands for population control measures such as culling and castration of the animals.

Meanwhile, other residents and environmental groups are advocating for coexistence, proposing the creation of wildlife corridors and limits on further housing development. The capybara conflict has also sparked broader discussions about biodiversity, ecosystem protection, and the challenges of balancing urban expansion with wildlife conservation.

Argentine suburb battles invasion of giant capybaras

Thousands of people are moving to Noor Delta, a plush development of gated communities in the wetlands around the Paraná River. However, hundreds of Capybaras want to live here too. There's not enough land to go round, and some say the semi-aquatic mammals are no longer welcome. There are times when we've got up to 20 in our garden. It's very inconvenient. They eat the plants and poo in the swimming pool, contaminating the water. Now some residents have launched legal proceedings calling on the Buenos Aires provincial authorities to contain what they call invaders. We're asking for their numbers to be reduced by half, and for the other half to be castrated like you would with any other wild animal, because of the damage they cause. They've attacked a minimum of 200 pet dogs. Capybaras, also known as carpinchos, are herbivores that can weigh as much as 66 kilos and produce litters of up to eight cubs. There are about 900 in Noor Delta, and 60,000 humans. It's a conflict as old as time itself. Abundant water, plenty of food, prime real estate. We all want to live here, us and them. Why can't we live together? Something has to give. Plenty of human residents believe they can live together, and are working with environmentalists to accommodate their furry friends. In the case of carpinchos in Noor Delta, the challenge is to turn a conflict into a model of coexistence, which is totally possible. We've seen how people adapt. We reduce the negative impact so that residents can live alongside nature. A local group called the Voice of the Carpincho is calling for housing development to be curtailed and for the creation of safe zones or corridors for the animals. They're representative of the fight to protect all our natural habitats. We're talking about the ecosystem, about biodiversity. Everything is included, all species. But there's something special about the carpincho. Call it what you will, the carpincho or capybara is winning friends around the world, helped by sympathetic merchandising. It's even been used as a class war symbol against the wealthy Noor Delta residents and property developers. But maybe, like anyone and everything else, they're just trying to stay cool.
