Last Tuesday, audio recordings describing an illegal kickback scheme were leaked to local media. In the audio, the president of Argentina's disability agency can allegedly be heard discussing bribery payments from pharmaceutical companies to Corina Mele. Because these recordings mention an inner circle that points to none other than the sister of the nation's president. Despite the scandal, recent polling shows Mele's La Libertad Avanza party and an allied right-wing party hold a firm lead ahead of legislative midterms scheduled for October 26th. The election will be a major test for Mele's brand of economic shock therapy, which has lowered inflation but has also led to major cuts to public services like health care and education.
