Hundreds of anti-government protesters have clashed with police for a second night in Lima, Peru, as anger grows over corruption, organized crime and recent pension reforms.

Demonstrations organized by the youth collective Generation Z have taken place in Lima, Peru, in response to a new law requiring young adults to join private pension funds. Protesters, many of whom face uncertain employment prospects, attempted to rally near government buildings, leading to clashes with police. Many demonstrators accused police of using excessive force, including tear gas, affecting not only protesters but also bystanders.

The protests are also fueled by longstanding grievances, including allegations of corruption against President Dina Boluarte, who is under investigation and faces criticism for her perceived lack of representation. Despite government efforts to stimulate the economy, the protests—demanding better wages and action against organized crime—continue without signs of resolution.

The latest demonstrations had been organised by a youth collective called Generation Z. Fighting broke out as the protesters tried to march to the government buildings in the Peruvian capital Lima to hold a rally there. Many demonstrators blamed the police for the violence that followed. The police have gassed us, repressed us, and then they cornered us and gassed everyone without considering that they were children or people who weren't involved in these protests, people just walking around. For the police, violence is the only response. What spurred these young people is a new law that's been passed requiring young adults to join a private pension fund, despite many of them facing an uncertain working environment. There are long-running grievances for the demonstrators as well, including alleged corruption by the increasingly unpopular president, Dina Buluwate. We have a president who doesn't represent us, who's under investigation for Rolex watches, surgeries and more. She's protected by Congress, which isn't doing anything to remove her from power. While the government hopes to boost productivity to overcome the slowdown in the economy, the current protests, demanding better wages and action against organised crime, show no sign of abating in the short term.
