Amazon has carried out its largest round of layoffs to date, cutting more than 14,000 jobs across various departments. New filings indicate that nearly 40% of the reported layoffs in key states were engineering roles, primarily impacting mid-level software developers, as well as product managers and senior staff.

The restructuring is part of CEO Andy Jassy's initiative to streamline operations and speed up decision-making, following a period of rapid hiring during the pandemic. The layoffs also affected Amazon's gaming division, AI shopping teams, and advertising business, with further job cuts expected in January. The company is reallocating resources toward automation and internal tools, though it states that artificial intelligence is not the primary driver of these changes.

Amazon's massive round of layoffs last month, more than 14,000 jobs, hit almost every corner of the business. But new filings revealed that the deepest cuts came in one place, engineering. My colleague, Annie Palmer, out with a story this morning, digging into war notices filed in New York, California, New Jersey, and Washington. Those are legally required disclosures that companies have to file with state agencies when conducting mass layoffs. And they show that nearly 40% of more than 4,700 reported cuts in those states were engineering roles, mostly mid-level software developers. Now, we also learned that more than 500 product and program managers were let go, along with senior and principal level staff. It's all part of CEO Andy Jassy's push to make Amazon operate like the world's largest startup. He said the company had added too many layers during the pandemic hiring boom, and that the current layoffs, the biggest in Amazon's 31-year history, were about fixing internal culture and speeding up decision-making. Now, Amazon says AI is not the primary driver, but it is shifting resources toward automation and internal tools, like its coding assistant, Kiro. HR chief, Beth Gledy, had said that this wave of AI is the most transformative technology since the internet, and the company needs to move faster, with fewer people, to stay competitive. Those layoffs, they also gutted Amazon's gaming division, shutting down most of its in-house development, and cuts hit both its AI shopping teams and even Amazon's high-margin ad business. And guys, there's more to come. Additional cuts are expected in January. Yeah, Mac, it's hard not to read through the lines here and see that maybe vibe coding is potentially replacing some of those engineers that comprise, as you say, 40% of those recent layoffs.
