U.S. airlines reported their highest Labor Day weekend passenger numbers in 15 years, driven by lower travel costs and strong demand. The Transportation Security Administration screened over 17 million travelers, with American Airlines experiencing its busiest Labor Day on record. Despite the surge, airlines largely maintained smooth operations, with only a small fraction of flights canceled nationwide. Some disruptions occurred due to storms in Texas and an emergency incident on an Air Canada flight in Denver. Travelers benefited from cheaper airfares, hotel rates, and rental car prices compared to the previous year, as well as lower gasoline prices.

We are down to the last three weeks of summer and the final three-day holiday weekend of the season is coming to an end. The lower cost of travel had Americans boarding planes in record numbers. It's been the busiest Labor Day weekend for air travel in 15 years, and now those travelers are heading home. Meg Oliver is at Newark Liberty Airport in New Jersey with more on that. Nationwide today, out of roughly 46,000 scheduled flights, just over 100 were canceled. People packed airports as the summer travel season comes to its unofficial end. Just make sure you get enough time to get through all the security and all that because there's a lot of people here. The TSA says it will screen more than 17 million people. American Airlines is expecting its busiest Labor Day weekend ever. How was the trip? It was great. Any issues? No, flights were timed. In fact, they were early. But in Texas, wet weather threatened to dampen a record-breaking holiday. Storms grounded flights and swamped streets in Houston. Yeah, it's like rear galley fire or smoke. That's what it's like. Rear galley smoke, copy. Crews activated emergency slides on an Air Canada flight in Denver after a strong smell alerted them to a possible electrical fire. One person was injured. At Newark Liberty, Tighe and Katie Downey told us one thing definitely made traveling easier this year. The prices actually weren't that bad. You know, like, in comparison to, like, say, three years ago when they went through the roof. Domestic round-trip flights are 6% cheaper compared to last year, averaging $720 a ticket. Hotel rates, down 11%, and rental car prices, 3% lower. Gas prices are down, too. The national average for a gallon of regular is 14 cents less than this time last year. According to AAA, the busiest time to drive home was between 1 and 4 as people come back to face reality with work and school. All right, Meg Oliver, thank you so much.
