A U.S.-based website has used AI to scrape and publish personal phone numbers of several world leaders, including Australia’s Anthony Albanese, France’s Emmanuel Macron, and the UK’s Starmer. Authorities have launched investigations into the data breach.

Personal phone numbers of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, opposition leader, acting Prime Minister, and New South Wales Premier have been published on a US-based website. The site, which claims to use artificial intelligence to collect contact details from across the internet, also lists information for other world leaders such as Emmanuel Macron and Keir Starmer.

Authorities have been notified, and the Australian Federal Police is investigating the incident. The website, which claims to have details of 300 million professionals, offers an opt-out feature but has raised concerns about the ethics of scraping and publishing personal data without consent. LinkedIn has been named as a possible source, but has stated that such data use violates its policies.

Just because it's public doesn't mean it's necessarily ethical to grab and use other people's data because they may not have consented to have it used in that way. LinkedIn's named as a possible source of the information. It says our policies are clear that third-party companies taking personal data and using it in ways our members did not agree to is prohibited and these companies are not affiliated with LinkedIn. The Prime Minister's office says it's been aware for some time and confirmed Australian Federal Police is investigating. The opposition leader has asked the website to remove her information.
