So far, only a small number of countries, including the European Union, United Kingdom, Australia, and South Korea, have pledged financial support, each contributing one million to aid organisations that bypass the Taliban government.

The Taliban authorities have appealed for international help, but overall funding to Afghanistan has significantly declined since they took power, with only 28% of the humanitarian target met this year. Rescue efforts have been hampered by blocked roads and landslides in affected regions. The earthquake is the third major one since 2021, compounding ongoing challenges such as reduced aid, a struggling economy, and the forced return of millions of Afghans from neighbouring countries.

The earthquake is the third major quake since the Taliban seized power in 2021 and the latest crisis to beset the country. Afghanistan is reeling from deep cuts to aid funding, a weak economy and millions of people forcibly returned from Iran and Pakistan.
