An Afghan immigrant who worked as a wartime translator for American troops has been detained by ICE after attending a routine biometrics appointment for his green card.

A former interpreter for the U.S. military, identified as Zia, has been detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during a standard green card appointment. Zia, who came to the United States legally with his family through humanitarian parole and a special immigrant visa, was taken into custody in Connecticut and transferred to Massachusetts.

Zia, a father of five and former wartime translator for American troops in Afghanistan, has no known criminal history. His legal team and advocates are seeking answers regarding his detention, emphasizing that he faces significant danger if returned to Afghanistan. He is currently in expedited removal proceedings.

A former interpreter for the U.S. military is in ICE custody after being seized during a routine appointment about his green card. Despite coming to the U.S. legally, the father of five is now behind bars. Scripps News National Correspondent Katia Tubman joins me live now from New York. Katia, a press conference about this just wrapped. What did you learn? That's right, Liz. It just wrapped, and we were hearing from not just advocates and supporters, but also the legal team of a man, an Afghan ally, who was detained by ICE last week as he was trying to follow through on his immigration and green card processing. His name is Zia. His last name has been withheld for the safety of his family. He's 35 years old, is a father of five, as well as a husband. He served as an interpreter in Afghanistan for about five years before fleeing the country after the Taliban takeover. We're learning that he was detained in East Hartford, Connecticut, as he was going for that biometrics check-in, something standard, his lawyer said. And his lawyer on the call made it clear that he did not break any rules, that he does not have a criminal history that they know of, and that they're still trying to figure out why he has been detained. Now, Zia was a former wartime translator for American troops in Afghanistan. His family fled, as I said, due to safety concerns because of their work with U.S. forces in Afghanistan. He came to the U.S. less than a year ago, and with his family, through humanitarian parole, as well as through an approved special immigrant visa. And that's just really hard to get. You have to go through several security clearances, and as well as get recommendation letters from other people who have served in the U.S. military. So when he was arrested, his family panicked. He is now actually been transported across state lines from Connecticut, where he was detained, to Massachusetts, where he's being held by ICE. And on the press call, which was hosted by Afghan evac a short while ago, his attorney said that if he's sent back to Afghanistan, he absolutely faces death. We're told that he's been placed in an expedited removal proceedings. Liz? Wow. Well, we're going to have an interview later on, as well, with a representative from Afghan evac.
