Venezuela has initiated an investigation into Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele and two other officials over allegations of abuse against Venezuelan migrants detained in El Salvador. The investigation follows the return of 252 Venezuelan migrants who were previously deported from the United States and held in El Salvador's Secat maximum security prison. 

Several returnees have described experiencing daily beatings and psychological distress while imprisoned, with many denying accusations of gang affiliation. Venezuelan authorities stated that only a small number of the returnees had criminal records. The government’s decision to investigate comes amid its own ongoing scrutiny regarding the imprisonment of foreign nationals.

The 33-year-old singer told of daily beatings and humiliations in the Secat maximum security prison built by Salvadoran President Nabil Bukele to house gang members. We are the first living beings to come out of that prison which was hell and where we met many innocent people. To all those who mistreated us, to all those who played with our lives and our freedom, I say this, vengeance and justice is mine and you will be judged before God. The Venezuelans returned home last Friday in an exchange that saw 10 Americans held in the country's prisons sent to the United States. Brothers Darwin and Jason Hernandez also returned home, both having been lifted in a raid by U.S. immigration agents in February that thought they might never see home again. It was terrible because it was psychologically painful because we didn't have any hope of leaving. They told us the only way that would get you out of there was a miracle and sometimes I went to bed and couldn't sleep thinking of my family. I have a son who remained in the United States and I thought of him. The deportees were expelled from the U.S., many without due process, accused of being members of the notorious Tren de Aragua criminal gang, something they deny. The Venezuelan government also says few of the returnees had criminal records. The number is very low, very low, less than one percent of the total. Of this group, the interior ministers said that only seven people had committed serious crimes in this country. Venezuela, which itself faces accusations of wrongfully imprisoning foreign nationals, says it will investigate Nayib Bukele and two other officials for the alleged abuse of Venezuelans detained in El Salvador.
