In San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Florenda's daughter Brenda is wishing her good morning. But this is an audio message from the past. Brenda is gone. Her partner's accused of murdering her. You ask me if it hurts. I cry for her. I don't know why she died. She was special, loving, a good mother. And now she's not here. Honduras is the deadliest country for women per capita in Latin America. It's a toxic mix of misogyny, high unemployment, which keeps many men cooped up at home, and lawlessness in a country which struggles with violent gangs. And Brenda is just one of the latest of thousands of deaths. How many women have appeared dead here in Honduras? And nobody says anything. Nobody answers for it. A small group of women in a gang-held neighbourhood on the outskirts of San Pedro Sula are trying to change things. Melania Reyes and her group, Momukla, try to protect those who are being attacked, even spiriting them out of the district. It doesn't always work. Sometimes it ends here, a rubbish dump outside town. We found them thrown here, bits of them, the girls. They'd taken the skin off them, like Yuka. Later we found the rest over there, further ahead, their heads. Melania even tries to solve cases. We investigate everything, who the women are with, how many children they have. It doesn't exist. That's one of the serious problems we have in this neighbourhood. The police sell themselves here. We don't have citizen security. Impunity, once a woman is killed, is a big problem in Honduras. But there is a small femicide unit in San Pedro Sula. They're trying to make a difference, but they're understaffed and under-resourced. You can see the office. We lack logistical support and attention. But Inspector Isabela Mossa is determined, and she's taking on Brenda's case. She's already found out things about the man accused of killing her. In 2014, he was convicted for the death of a young foreign woman, tried and sentenced, then released in 2022. So that makes us think that he already had a modus operandi and that we are dealing with a psychopath, a femicide perpetrator. We've just talked to the lead detective on Brenda's case. She didn't want to show her face on camera because she's had threats too. But she did confirm for us that the autopsy shows that Brenda was killed by asphyxiation and she was also raped. There's also another thing too. Brenda was pregnant when she died. Two lives gone. Florinda is waiting for justice. Meanwhile, all she can do is visit Brenda's hilltop grave. She was 27 years old.
