Last week we saw campus journalists protesting against the murder of Al Jazeera journalists in Gaza and then over the weekend thousands gathered to rally in the southern Philippines. Now center-left activists along with labor rights advocates as well as an alliance of student organizations they're here holding a vigil not just to condemn what they say are targeted killings of Palestinian journalists in Gaza but they're here to join increasing global opposition to what they describe as Israel's intensifying genocide in Gaza. When every day we see the killings of children we see bombings of hospitals in Gaza and I think there's not much question in terms of using the word genocide. They say they're particularly concerned by a decision by the Israeli government to seize control of Gaza city which will inevitably displace people already repeatedly displaced and could result in the killing of more innocent civilians including children. You cannot substitute bullets and bombs for something that requires political will for something that requires a political settlement and what we are seeing in Palestine is essentially an unfinished political question. It's the question of the right to exist of all peoples in that land. And so they're urging Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accept a ceasefire deal that Hamas has said it's already agreed to but more importantly they say Israel's allies must stop feeding its war machine and that includes the Philippines which they say is one of the top buyers of Israeli weapons.
