Nine members of the Gaza aid flotilla arrived home on Sunday after being deported by Israel, with some alleging they had been subject to inhumane conditions whilst in detention there.

The activists reported experiences of psychological and physical abuse, including being handcuffed for extended periods, placed in cages, and denied essential medicines. Among the detainees was Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who was reportedly singled out for mistreatment. Israel's foreign ministry has dismissed the allegations as 'brazen lies.' Following their detention, activists have been deported to several countries, prompting protests in support of the flotilla and against the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

There was cheering and chanting from a crowd of supporters, as activists from the Gaza Flotilla were repatriated to Portugal. Many spoke of mistreatment they received while in detention in Israel, alleging psychological and physical torture. Israel's foreign ministry has described the claims as, quote, brazen lies. We saw some comrades being beaten and we witnessed some of that happening. We were handcuffed for several hours and provoked by the Israeli authorities. We were then placed in actual cages. The Gaza Flotilla consisted of 45 boats seeking to break Israel's naval blockade of Gaza and deliver a symbolic amount of aid. Starting last Wednesday, Israeli forces intercepted the global Sumud Flotilla in international waters, taking around 450 activists to detention in Israel. Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was among those detained and, according to those imprisoned alongside her, singled out for mistreatment. Other allegations include the withholding of essential medicine from detainees. A 75-year-old colleague was asking for insulin for three days and officers said they didn't have medicines for animals in jail. Another Mexican colleague was asking for medicine for cardiac disease, saying it was urgent. They said it could only be urgent when her heart stopped. Israel began deporting members of the Flotilla on Friday. Flights have taken place to countries including Spain, Portugal, Italy and Tunisia. Over the weekend, there was a wave of protests in support of the Flotilla activists and against the war in Gaza.
