The Israeli military brought our CBS News team for a rare look deep inside the Gaza Strip, to the Shejaiya neighborhood in the Palestinian territory's former de-facto capital, Gaza City. Holly Williams reports.

CBS News correspondent Holly Williams was granted access to the Gaza Strip for the first time since the latest ceasefire, traveling with the Israeli military. The report details the extensive destruction across Gaza, with neighborhoods like Shejaya described as completely obliterated after two years of war. 

The visit comes amid a US-brokered ceasefire that included the exchange of hostages' remains. Israeli officials stated that further withdrawal and reconstruction efforts depend on the return of all hostages, a condition that has not yet been met. Both sides have been accused of ceasefire violations, and skepticism remains about the prospects for demilitarization and lasting peace.

A rare look inside the Gaza Strip

Israel today received the body of another hostage from Gaza under a ceasefire brokered by the United States. Israel will hand over the bodies of 15 Palestinians in exchange for the remains of each hostage. Two years of war have decimated most of the Gaza Strip. Holly Williams takes us inside the territory tonight for an up-close look at what's left. For the first time since the latest ceasefire began, today the Israeli military allowed us into Gaza, travelling with their convoy. As agreed under the fragile truce deal, Israeli forces have withdrawn behind the so-called Yellow Line. It cuts the Gaza Strip roughly in half, on the other side are most of Gaza's people. Around two million Palestinians are living in the rubble left behind by two years of harrowing war. I have reported from a lot of war zones, I've seen cities that have been very heavily bombed, but I have never seen anything like this before. This was the Shejaya neighbourhood, now it has been completely obliterated. The Israeli military told us that the bodies of several hostages were found in the ruins of Shejaya, including Itay Hen, an American-Israeli soldier whose remains were returned last night. The bodies of other hostages remain in Gaza. Lieutenant Colonel Narev Shoshani told us that Hamas has repeatedly violated the ceasefire agreement. Israel's also accused of violations, including with lethal strikes, which it says were in retaliation. What needs to happen for Israeli forces to withdraw further from Gaza and for the rebuilding to begin? Well, stage one hasn't been completed. Stage one says Hamas returns all the hostages within 72 hours. It's been weeks since that deadline. President Trump's peace plan also calls for the demilitarisation of the Gaza Strip. But many are sceptical that Hamas will give up its weapons, which could make a full Israeli withdrawal unlikely.

The US government shutdown is now in its 36th day—a record-breaking length. While both political parties blame each other, the result is being felt by the public. Hundreds of thousands of federal workers are going without pay, and government programs like food benefits have been slashed.
