Roberts was detained by ICE during a targeted operation, with officials alleging he possessed a loaded handgun and cash, and had overstayed a student visa issued in 1999. 

The school district confirmed Roberts had disclosed a previous minor firearms conviction but stated they were unaware of a deportation order issued earlier. Community members expressed support for Roberts, citing his positive impact on the school system, while some questioned the motivations behind the arrest and the thoroughness of background checks conducted by the district.
