Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Ozempic, has announced a significant price reduction for some patients, following an earlier price cut for its similar weight loss drug, Wegovy. This move comes as the company faces increasing competition from Eli Lilly, whose drugs Monjaro and ZepBound offer lower prices and robust supply, challenging Novo Nordisk's market dominance.

The price cuts are targeted at patients with type 2 diabetes who do not have insurance, though the affordability remains a concern. In addition to pricing, the companies compete on effectiveness; a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that patients on Eli Lilly's drug lost more weight on average than those on Novo Nordisk's. Improvements in related health conditions were proportional to the amount of weight lost.
