Biologists are employing heart monitors, initially developed for humans, to collect detailed physiological data from endangered animals. These devices, implanted under the skin, track metrics such as heart rate, body temperature, and hydration, providing insights into animal stress and well-being. 

The initiative, led by researchers at the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute and supported by donated technology from Medtronic, has seen over 600 monitors used in various species worldwide. The data helps conservationists identify stressors, improve breeding programs, and make informed decisions to support species survival, particularly for animals threatened by habitat loss and illegal hunting.
