The new weapon, produced by the state-owned armorer near Bogota, is intended to supply both national and international markets, providing greater autonomy for the country's armed forces.

This development comes after Colombia ended its military contracts with Israel, following diplomatic tensions over Israel's actions in Gaza. The United States also halted arms contracts after removing Colombia from its list of allies in the war on drugs. The Miranda rifle is reported to be lighter than the previously used Israeli-designed Galil rifles, with officials planning to produce 400,000 units over the next five years.
