Burkina Faso's transitional parliament has unanimously approved a law that criminalises homosexual and transgender activity. The legislation imposes fines and prison sentences on those found guilty, and allows for deportation of non-citizens who are repeat offenders. 

This move follows similar actions by neighbouring countries such as Mali, Ghana, and Uganda, which have also recently toughened their laws against LGBT individuals. Over half of African countries currently criminalise same-sex relationships, with only a few, like South Africa and Cape Verde, considered more accepting.
