To hear the news this morning that he's passed, doesn't matter what level of cricket you play, there's always a chance of something like this happening. Ben debuted in Ferntree Gully's first XI last February. His cap now a treasured keepsake of a much-loved player and friend. His heartbroken parents say we find some comfort that he was doing something he did for so many summers. Also remembering his teammate who was bowling in the nets, saying this accident has impacted two young men. It's going to be a tough day, it's going to be a tough few days and few weeks for the cricket community. Hundreds have posted their tributes online as the shock of his sudden death is felt across the codes. The only thing that's consoling about it was that Ben died doing something that he really loved. An accomplished footballer, Ben had notched 100 games for the Hawks. His club plans to hold a Ben Austin round next season to honour the sportsmanship he showed on and off the oval. Ben wanted everyone to hold off singing the song until the other team had left the club room so that they didn't feel poorly for it. So just that kind of kid, I think that just sort of describes what he's like. Around 50 of his teammates went to the hospital last night to say their final farewell. Today, as tributes continue to gather at the Fern Tree Gully nets, Ben's parents have asked everyone who loves the game, tonight, please put your bats out for Benny. Our beautiful boy, our beautiful respectful boy, rest in peace. Cricket Victoria has offered its support to Ben's club and family, saying they are organising a tribute to him during this weekend's matches.
