China's chief trade negotiator confirmed that stopping the fentanyl trade is on the agenda, alongside other trade issues such as export controls and reciprocal tariffs. China maintains it has strict narcotic controls and has requested specific details from the U.S. regarding the cooperation it seeks. Despite ongoing enforcement efforts, including recent arrests in Philadelphia, fentanyl continues to contribute to over half of drug overdose deaths in the United States.

China's chief trade negotiator, speaking in Kuala Lumpur at the weekend, confirmed that stopping the fentanyl trade would be on the agenda of trade talks with the United States. There were numerous items on the agenda, including export controls on both sides, the issue of reciprocal tariffs going a step further for an extended period of time, the issue of fentanyl tariffs and cooperation on banning the production of fentanyl. China says it maintains strict narcotic control policies and has asked the U.S. to specify exactly what cooperation it requires from China, detail that Trump has yet to announce. But raids like this one in Philadelphia last week to arrest 24 alleged dealers shows the drugs are still hitting the streets.
