The United Nations Human Rights Council expressed concern over the high death toll and called for thorough investigations, urging Brazilian authorities to uphold international human rights standards and ensure civilian safety.

A massive raid on a drug trafficking gang in Rio de Janeiro on Tuesday has led to deadly shootouts between the group and police officers. Officials say at least 60 suspected gang members were killed in the exchange of fire, and also confirmed that four police officers lost their lives. It's not yet clear how many people were injured. Police forces deployed helicopters and armored vehicles to carry out the raid in the sprawling low-income favelas of Complexo de Alemão and Penha in Rio. They were targeting the notorious Red Command gang, who are responsible for a significant portion of the movement of illicit drugs and weapons in Brazil's second most populous city. Rio State Governor Claudio Castro said the raid was the biggest in the city's history, which seized close to 100 illegal firearms and over half a ton of narcotics. At least 81 suspects were also arrested during the raid. Police say those who were neutralized resisted police action. The UN's Human Rights Council said it was horrified by the deadly police operation and called for thorough investigations into the matter. They also urged authorities to uphold their obligations to not endanger civilians and protect human lives, as enshrined in international human rights law.
