The meeting follows a period of heightened tensions and reciprocal tariffs between the United States and China. President Trump expressed optimism about reaching a trade agreement, highlighting the positive relationship between the two leaders. According to US Treasury Secretary Scott Besson, the US is likely to drop the threat of an additional 100 percent tariff on Chinese goods, while China is expected to resume purchases of American soybeans. The outcome of these discussions is seen as significant for the global economy.

This is a CBS News special report. I'm Jessie Mitchell in New York. President Donald Trump is about to hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. This is their first face-to-face since Trump returned to the White House. President Trump and President Xi are shaking hands. Now let's go live. Mr. President, do you plan to sign a trade deal today? Could be. I think we have this one. We'll have a great understanding. We have a great relationship. We've always had a great relationship. Will you discuss Taiwan with us? Thank you very much. You see the leaders in South Korea, and that is also where we find senior White House correspondent Weijia Zhang in South Korea, traveling with the president, Weijia. Thank you for joining us. This is the first meeting in six years between Presidents Trump and Xi, and it comes after months of escalating rhetoric and tariffs back and forth. How possible is a potential deal right now? Well, you just heard right there from President Trump himself, who has been expressing optimism this entire week after his trade negotiating team said they had breakthrough talks over the weekend. And just now, our own Nancy Cordes asked if they thought an agreement would be signed today. The president said, we'll see, but then went on to talk about how great of a relationship he has with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Even though they have not met face-to-face before today, during Trump's first term, they have been in touch before. They have spoken before. And of course, they have a history, because the president met with him on multiple occasions during his first term, Jesse. And so, the entire administration has been very positive about a potential trade deal. And of course, it's not just America and China watching this, but really the entire world, because what happens today could drive the entire global economy. There's been so much hardline talk, Weijia. So what concessions, if any, are we most likely to see from either side? You know, the treasury secretary, Scott Besson, actually previewed a lot of what they expect to happen on Face the Nation with our other colleague, Margaret Brennan. He had an interview with her and basically said that the additional 100 percent tariff that President Trump has threatened to impose on China is likely off the table. And he said that Beijing will agree to purchase soybeans from American farmers. And that has not happened since the U.S. imposed tariffs on China in February. And that has cost American farmers billions. We lost Weijia there with some technical issues, but we hope that she and Nancy travel safely.
