The glacier, which once maintained a balance between mass gain and loss, now faces abrupt changes, including reduced snowfall and hotter, longer summers.

This accelerated melt threatens water supplies for communities and contributes to rising global sea levels. In addition to climate pressures, Argentina's government is considering reforms to the 2010 Glacier Law to allow increased mining activity in glacier regions, raising further concerns among environmentalists and scientists about the future of these critical water sources.

World’s glaciers melting at record speed, scientists sound alarm

The southern Patagonia ice field between Chile and Argentina is one of the largest in the world. There are dozens of glaciers in this part of the Andes mountains, but one of the most prominent ones is an example of a changing global climate. This is the Perito Moreno glacier. It was once considered a stable glacier because of the near balance between mass gain and mass loss. But that has started to change. This glacier has started to retreat, and most experts are saying that it's because of climate change. We visited the glacier with Fernando Armani, who has been monitoring the glaciers for years. He wanted to show us how serious the situation is. We are in an area where the glacier melts, and we've been measuring it for years. It's losing an average of 16 meters a year. In the past four years, the retreat has become abrupt. This winter, it was supposed to snow in the high areas, and it didn't. The summers are longer and hotter. The glacier covers 250 square kilometers. Between 2018 and 2025, its edges receded a distance of nearly 2,000 meters. But the areas we're walking on now, we're told, may not be here next year. This massive body of ice once seemed eternal, but that's not the case anymore. It's disappearing faster than most people think. When you're up here, you realize what's at stake. The water from here feeds rivers in Patagonia all the way to the Atlantic Ocean. The rapid change contributes to rising global sea levels. Glaciers are connected to life and to the existence of communities and cities. Water is life, and the glaciers are the water of the future. Hopefully the next generations will be able to have what we have today. But now the glaciers in Argentina's Andes Mountains are facing another threat. The 2010 Glacier Law bans activities that could damage the glacier or periglacier areas, like mining or hydrocarbon exploitation. But that's something that the current administration of Javier Millet wants to change. He wants to reform the law to promote the investment of billions of dollars in mining in a country struggling with an economic crisis. You have the area of the glacier and the periglacier area where you can carry out mining activities. That today is not well defined. Environmentalists want people to starve before touching anything. It's a primitive attitude. Scientists say global warming is responsible for the retreat of the world's glaciers. The Perito Moreno was an exception, but like many others, it's now dripping away.
