A woman in her 70s is in hospital with serious injuries after a car drove into outdoor seating at a cafe in Leichhardt, in Sydney's inner west. Police located the car a short time later and arrested the driver, a man believed to be aged in his 30s.

A BMW drove into the front of a cafe in Leichhardt, Sydney, striking customers seated outside. Witnesses attempted to alert those in harm's way and intervened as the vehicle approached. A woman in her 70s was pinned by the car and suffered serious injuries, while the man she was with was knocked from his chair. The driver, believed to be in his 30s, initially fled the scene but was later located and arrested by police. Both the injured woman and the driver were taken to hospital, with the woman in a serious but stable condition. Authorities have launched an investigation into the crash, and the cafe has resumed operations despite the damage.

The little dog outside lucky to escape but the woman in her 70s wasn't so fortunate, slammed up against the wall of the cupcake room as the man she was sitting with falls back off his chair. Those passing by sprinted to their aid. The lady was pinned by the car, her legs were trapped. She managed to actually pull herself out a little bit. Sean McKean and Kieran Fox not only witnessed it all unfold, they tried to stop it from happening in the first place. The car was starting to creep across the road and so he jumped out and started banging on his window saying wake up, wake up, wake up and there was no response. And then he came and hit the kerb and then he jolted awake and then he accidentally, I assume, hit the accelerator on his car. The driver initially jumped out of the BMW after being confronted by witnesses before jumping back in and taking off. Police found and arrested the man, believed to be in his 30s, a short time later. He was taken to hospital where he remains under police guard for assessment. The woman too, hospitalised in a serious but stable condition. Police have launched an investigation into the crash while the cafe continues to operate, minus a few bits of now broken furniture and a couple of crushed cupcakes.
