Police say the woman scaled a wall to access restricted areas and turned off medical gases, which are critical for patient care. Sutherland Hospital had to switch to portable oxygen and air, and it took two hours to restore the gas systems. Authorities confirmed that patient care was not affected and services were quickly restored at both hospitals. The woman, who is known to local police, has been charged with several offences including public nuisance and unlawfully entering premises. The incident has led to calls for a review of hospital security and protective measures.

Forensic police trace the steps of a woman who is alleged to have tampered with the gas and water supplies of Sutherland Hospital and Carina Private Hospital, scaling a wall to gain access at around 1am. Someone has been able to access a restricted area, climbed into a restricted area and essentially turned off medical gases. I can't stress enough how catastrophic and serious in nature this could have been. Gas was used to treat patients and in some cases sustain life. A 42-year-old woman is in police custody. It was good police work, they were very swift in making that arrest. It's not a joke, it's not a laughing matter, it's not a prank, it's not something that should be underestimated, it is extremely serious. Sutherland Hospital had to switch to portable oxygen and air and it took two hours for the gas systems to be restored. The Health Minister says patient care wasn't impacted. Endangering people's health and wellbeing. And the security at the hospital. And the security, that's true. Carina Hospital says its non-medical gas was switched off and the hospital is now operating normally. All services were quickly restored with minimal disruption and no impact to patient care. We're seeing a lot of issues arise, whether they're violent or these type of issues, and they come into the hospital setting sadly at this time. The government says it will now assess if it needs to take more protective measures. But given the nature and the importance of these gases, if there are things that we can do to further restrict someone doing that, then we will obviously look at it. The union also wants a review of security staffing. Police arrested the woman just before 4am for alleged breach of bail at nearby Miranda. The 42-year-old remains in custody after staying at Sutherland Police Station all day today where she has just been charged with public nuisance, unlawfully entering a premises, damaging property, tampering with fire alarms and also trespassing at a Darlinghurst hotel yesterday. This woman is well known to local officers and it's believed that mental health may be a contributing factor. She will face Sutherland local court tomorrow, Sandra.
