Witnesses reported that the woman entered the water in an attempt to rescue the child before both were swept downstream. Emergency services, including police and SES crews, responded to the scene and performed CPR, but both victims were declared dead at the scene.

Authorities blocked off the area for several hours as investigations continued, focusing on identifying the victims. Police will prepare a report for the coroner regarding the incident.

In developing news tonight, there has been a horrific incident in Melbourne's south-east where a woman and a child both drowned after falling into a creek. Let's go straight to Rory Campbell in our Melbourne newsroom. Rory, it's believed the woman was attempting to rescue the child when she also got into trouble. First of all, witnesses told police they saw the woman and child being swept away in the Dandenong Creek after falling in around 3.45 this afternoon. Officers believe the woman had been trying to help the child. The pair drifted downstream as emergency services rushed to the scene. Police officers searched the creek bank on foot with a police helicopter providing support from above. The woman and child were unconscious when they were pulled from the water. They were found inside of each other but with quite some distance between them. CPR was performed but the best efforts of those trying to save the pair couldn't revive them and they were declared dead at the scene. There was a body floating, two went like in the water, swam, saved them from the water and like they were doing CPR, it was like a woman and like a small kid around like eight or nine. It is very heartbreaking, very, very sad news to hear. It's not really good. The area around the creek was blocked off for quite some time after the rescue effort and into this evening. SES crews conducted patrols along the creek bank. Police officers carried out their investigations. A large part of that was working to identify the woman and child. Police will be providing a report to the coroner.
