Severe winter weather has led to whiteout conditions and hazardous travel across Pennsylvania and New York. Multiple crashes and pileups occurred on major interstates, including a significant incident south of Syracuse, New York, that closed a seven-mile stretch of highway and sent eight people to hospitals. In Erie County, up to 11 inches of snow contributed to several crashes, while western Pennsylvania saw big rigs involved in a pileup on Interstate 80.

The cold front extended its reach to the East Coast, including Florida, where freeze warnings were issued and Miami recorded its coldest morning of the season. Meteorologists warn that additional snow and cold temperatures are expected over the coming weekend, with potential for further accumulation in the Northeast and even the Deep South.

Now let's get to the latest winter weather causing trouble in the northeast. A lot of big trucks got stuck in this mess north of Pittsburgh on Thursday. Snow-covered roads and poor visibility led to several crashes and traffic jams on interstates throughout the region. CBS News meteorologist Rob Marciano is tracking that for us. Heavy snow and whipping winds brought whiteouts across parts of New York and Pennsylvania, causing a series of interstate shutdowns. The whole block gets up on Highway 81. Just south of Syracuse, New York, a series of crashes on Interstate 81 left dozens of cars and trucks in a mangled mess. Eight people were taken to hospitals, and a seven-mile-long stretch of the highway was closed for about four hours. We did not get hit at all. Near Rochester, up to eight inches of new snow left drivers wary of traveling on slippery streets there. I drive slow. I don't go very far in this weather. In western Pennsylvania, multiple big rigs crashed in this pileup on Interstate 80. Dozens of trucks were stuck in the backlog, while traffic was forced to detour around the wreck. Up to 11 inches falling in Erie County, where treacherous conditions on Interstate 90 led to at least three crashes in the span of five miles. At least two people were trapped and had to be pulled out. In the Midwest, communities near the Michigan-Indiana border are still digging out of heavy lake effect snow after a dump of up to 20 inches. Evelyn digging it out of the car for myself and my wife. No warm-up in sight here. And multiple pulses, you see them here on the radar, coming through the Great Lakes that will reinstigate more in the way of snow and maybe lake effect snow. And the cold air has already infiltrated the entire East Coast all the way down to Florida, where we've got freeze warnings out for a good chunk of the state. Forty-five degrees in Miami is the coldest morning of the season. Thirty-two, the freezing mark in Orlando. It's okay for the citrus crops, but certainly the iguanas may be taking a tumble at that sort of temperature. All right, the backside of this, we've got big-time winds, 60 to 80 mile-an-hour winds. Warnings up from North Dakota to North Texas. And that will bring in more in the way of colder air. So as we head for the next blast over the weekend, it will be minus one and many on Sunday. That's the actual temperature below freezing in Atlanta. And that will set the stage for the potential of seeing a little bit of snow, at least across the Deep South. We'll see a whole ton of accumulation here. But on Saturday morning, maybe across the Northeast, and this guy will develop and ride up the coastline as well.
