A 55-year-old man, Michael Gann, has been indicted in New York City for allegedly leaving homemade bombs at several locations, including residential rooftops in lower Manhattan and the Williamsburg Bridge. Court documents state that Gann purchased chemicals online to create improvised explosive devices (IEDs), with authorities finding five devices on rooftops, one on subway tracks, and another in his possession at the time of arrest.

Surveillance footage reportedly shows Gann on the rooftops, where investigators also discovered shotgun shells and a significant quantity of explosive powder. Gann faces three federal charges related to explosives and destructive devices. Investigators have credited witnesses for assisting in the arrest, and CBS News has reached out to Gann's attorney for comment.

Williamsburg Bridge among sites in NYC bomb plot case

Now to a disturbing investigation right here in New York, where a man has been indicted for leaving homemade bombs at multiple sites all around the city. CBS New York's Elijah Westbrook joins us now from what appears to have been the biggest of these alleged targets, a very busy, very large Williamsburg bridge. Elijah, good morning. Yes, good morning to you, Tony. And according to court documents that were unsealed just yesterday, federal prosecutors are alleging that 55-year-old Michael Gann had purchased chemicals online to create what are called IEDs. There on your screen, you're looking at images of these devices and those chemicals. Five were found on residential rooftops in lower Manhattan. One was found on subway tracks on the Williamsburg Bridge, which leads to Brooklyn, and another was allegedly on him at the time of his arrest. Now, authorities say surveillance cameras show Gann on the rooftops, where they also found four shotgun shells, which he intended to combine with the IEDs, and 30 grams of explosive powder. So, to put that in context, that's 600 times the legal limit for consumer fireworks. Now, hours before his arrest in early June, Gann had posted this on Instagram, quote, who wants me to go out to play like no tomorrow? Well, he's facing three separate charges, attempted destruction of property by means of explosives, transportation of explosive materials, and unlawful possession of destructive devices. CBS News has reached out to his attorney for comment. We do want to mention that investigators are also crediting witnesses for helping them lead to his arrest. Nate? All right.
